10.13 Archaeological Interest Areas

Acton Area

A1

Church Acton High Street, W3 - The village was recorded in 1222 and settled continuously into post medieval times. The parish church existed in 1231 and permission for a market was granted in 1232, and there was a medieval priory. An area of prehistoric and Roman finds is centred on Shakespeare Road, with further prehistoric finds south of the High Street.

A2

Creffield Road, W3 - Lynch Hill terrace gravels have revealed Middle Paleolithic and Mesolithic tools and an ancient stream bed. Scattered finds have been made in adjoining streets.

A3

East Acton Lane, W3 - Medieval hamlet existed in 1294 with occupation north and south of the lane. South-west of the hamlet was a Manor House in 1532. To the north is an undated earthwork and prehistoric finds.

A4

Friar's Place Farm - Moated Site, Horn Lane W3 - A moated site west of Horn Lane (formerly 367) probably medieval.

A5

Mill Hill Estate, Avenue Gardens and Heathfield Road, W3 - Lynch Hill terrace gravels form promontory with finds from Mesolithic, Bronze Age, Roman and Saxon periods. A Bronze Age cemetery and other prehistoric finds occurred on the South Acton estate east of Bollo Lane.

Twyford Abbey NW10 - site of a medieval moated manor of which only part of the great hall survives. There was a St Mary's Church in 1114 and a hamlet in 1086 later depopulated.

Westfields Road (North Acton Playing Field) W3 - moated site of the early 13th Century demesne house of St Paul's Cathedral Estate.

A8

Acton Green Common, W3 - possible medieval hamlet around the Green; the edge of a Roman Road and possible Roman settlement at South Parade.

 
Ealing Area

A9

Coldhawe Manor (Northfields Recreation Ground) Little Ealing W5 - the house was first recorded in 1377. It may not have been moated, but could have been surrounded by a medieval hamlet; prehistoric and Roman finds made to the south.

Ealing Manor, Gunnersbury Lane W5 - medieval manor house was called Ealingbury in 1442.

St Mary's Road, Ealing W5 - moated site of Ealing Manor and medieval settlement. St Mary's was first recorded in 1130. The old Rectory House (1529) stood to the north. Widely spaced prehistoric findspots and one Roman occur in the area - which extends west to Culmington Road, east to Gunnersbury Avenue, north to the Broadway and south to Ranelagh Road.

 
Hanwell Area

A12

Hanwell Village, Church Road, W7 - medieval settlement of Hanwell with St Mary's Church (13th Century); and Hanwell Bridge where there was a medieval water mill; and prehistoric finds north of the Broadway.

A13

Oaklands Road, W7 - seven 6th Century graves with broaches and weapons were found in 1886 in the school site, part of a linear Saxon cemetery.

 
Northolt and Perivale

A14

Horsenden Hill - Ancient Monuments and area of potential early settlement; and Brabsden Green, Horsenden Lane North, Greenford - medieval village with 13th Century finds, contracted in size in post-medieval times.

A15

Down Barns, Sharvel Lane, Northolt - Ancient Monument - medieval moated manor and the area surrounding with a supposed deserted medieval village and associated medieval field systems. Sharvel Lane is an ancient trackway and Yeading Brook may have evidence of prehistoric occupation beside it.

A16

Greenford Village, Oldfield Lane, Greenford - Holy Cross Church was rebuilt in the 15th Century. Greenford Magna dates from 13th Century or earlier. Manor House west of the church was first mentioned in the 16th Century.

Northolt Village Green, Northolt - includes the scheduled Ancient Monument, Northolt Moated Manor, St Mary's medieval church; possibly traces of medieval village under Belvue Park and Saxon predecessor on land to the north.

Improve the impressive Town Hall as a conference and community centre. Limited public car parking - accessed via Springbridge Road car park, and Uxbridge Road, if possible. Servicing access via Longfield Ave and Uxbridge Road, including for Nos.14-36 New Broadway.

Assemble site to build more shops - small units and/or larger store with residential flats above. New public car park. Promote local market and cafes. Link to improvements to Dean Gardens. Respect buildings of 'facade value'.

Subject to further consideration of the need for a new link road across part of this site (linked with pedestrianisation of High St) - Promote development of a café, community arts, education and residential "lanes development" linking Town Hall/ Uxbridge Road to Ealing Green/Mattock Lane/ Pitshanger Manor/Ealing Studios/Walpole Park. Retain Cinema frontage and carefully consider any changes to 35-57 New Broadway, which is of facade value. Retain most of street frontage to Bond street, but with new pedestrian permeability. Improve Barnes Pikle. Create informal and safe open spaces and walkways.If new cinema is not built on an alternative site, improve existing cinema with same linkages as above. If new link road promoted, develop sites EB4 and EB7 together with Bond Street /High Street pedestrianisation. Consider large development site for mixed uses and quality public space and walkways.

Scheme to have Broadway frontage to retain "street". Development to consider integration with West London Transit. Development to link with redevelopment of Station (EB5) and improved interchange facilities for all modes of transport and strategic rail options. Development to improve Haven Green open space and trees and ensure no significant overshadowing.

Station redevelopment and interchange improvement. Encourage substantial office development above the Station at this strategic transport interchange. Aim to turn the Station into a major employment focus. Some retail possible. Development to be linked to site EB2 and interchange improvements. Development to provide improved pedestrian access and environment in the Station and on Station Broadway. Development to be considered as option site for a "bus station and interchange with the Station". Landmark building opportunity. Scheme needs to consider access by all modes of transport, "development over the track" options and improving the station forecourt to make it accessible and more like a public space.
